Redistricting Commission Moves to Let Politicians Pick Their Voters

“Independent” Commission Ignores the Will of Voters, Abandons Communities of Interest

LANSING, MI, October 7, 2021 – FAIR Maps today urged the so-called “Independent” redistricting commission to stand up to bullies from Democratic interest groups that have mounted a large-scale pressure campaign to gerrymander maps delivering more seats to one political party.

Voters have repeatedly urged the Commission to craft new maps to protect communities of interest – to let voters pick their politicians, not the other way around – and the state’s Constitution prioritizes communities of interest above partisan map-making.

“The Democrat interest groups that created this amendment specifically designed it to lack any objective standards, opting for nebulous terms like “communities of interest” and “partisan fairness,” said Tony Daunt, Executive Director of FAIR Maps. “Now that this focus on communities of interest hasn’t given them the comfortable Democrat majorities that they so desperately want, they’re panicking and telling the commission to simply ignore the public. The commission is betraying voters to aid left-wing bullies who want to let politicians pick their voters – not the other way around. Voters were promised better, and it’s time for the Commission to deliver.”

FAIR Maps participates in every aspect of Michigan’s redistricting process to achieve FAIR – Fair and Independent Redistricting – plans that appropriately reflect the diversity of Michigan’s population and the communities where they live.
