FAIR Maps: Commissioners Display Shocking Arrogance and Contempt for Michigan Taxpayers with Pay Raise Vote
LANSING, MI, February 24, 2022 – FAIR Maps Executive Director Tony Daunt today provided the following statement after the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission voted to give itself a pay increase:
“The eight members of this commission who voted to give themselves an almost $4,000 raise, despite the bulk of their work being finished and already facing a significant budget shortfall, should resign in shame. Sadly, as we’ve repeatedly seen from this body, they’re accountable to no one, incapable of shame or even basic levels of competence, and now gleefully padding their bank accounts at the expense of Michigan taxpayers. This is an outrageous development and I encourage Michiganders of all stripes to speak up and demand a reversal of this action.”
The eight members who voted for this pay increase include all four Democrats – Juanita Curry, Brittni Kellom, M.C. Rothhorn, and Dustin Witjes (who proposed the motion) – and four of the supposedly “independent” commissioners – Anthony Eid, Steve Lett, Rebecca Szetela, and Janice Vallette.
FAIR Maps participates in every aspect of Michigan’s redistricting process to achieve FAIR – Fair and Independent Redistricting – plans that appropriately reflect the diversity of Michigan’s population and the communities where they live.
