Democrat Front Group Pushes Redistricting Commission to Break the Law

Constitution Requires Body Act in Public with Full Transparency – Not Hide from Public with Secret Meetings and Secret Votes

LANSING, MI, November 18, 2021 – FAIR Maps Executive Director Tony Daunt provided the following statement today after public suggestions from Nancy Wang, Executive Director of Voters Not Politicians, that the state’s independent citizens redistricting commission violate the Michigan Constitution and the Open Meetings Act by choosing maps in secret:

“Voters in Detroit and across Michigan have spoken clearly – and forcefully – in recent weeks about the importance of fair maps. This ridiculous suggestion that the commission conduct it’s climactic vote by secret ballot from a founding member and the current Executive Director of the group that wrote the amendment and promised voters a ‘fair, impartial, and transparent process,’ wouldn’t just violate the spirit of the process – it would likely break the law.

“The state’s redistricting process has been riddled with mistakes and incompetence from the start. Whether it’s allowing Democrats to pawn themselves off as “Independents,” disregarding citizen input on “communities of interest,” or holding secret meetings to discuss the Voting Rights Act, this commission has proven to be a disaster.  After witnessing the duplicity and cluelessness of one of the leaders of the group that established the commission, it’s not hard to see why.”

FAIR Maps participates in every aspect of Michigan’s redistricting process to achieve FAIR – Fair and Independent Redistricting – plans that appropriately reflect the diversity of Michigan’s population and the communities where they live.
